The person who commissioned this desktop sculpture made of silver, porphyry, and ivory, was Henry of Orleans, Duke of Aumale, the 5th son of Louis Philippe, the last king of France. Inherited the vast land and wealth of Conde, including the family estate (château) of Chantilly. Only five such sculptures were ordered for important people, and the order was entrusted to Emil Froman-Meris, one of the best jewelers in the country. The sculpture is an ivory plate. On one side features a relief portrait of the Duke, below on the engraved cartouche the inscription “AMICO / EDUARDO BOCHER / IN MEMORIAM / VII.A.KAL.NOV. / MDCCCLXXXVI ”(to a friend of Eduardo Bocher in memory of the 7th day of the calendar November 1884), and another cartouche with the monogram “OH ”in honor of the Duke. On the other side of the plate is an image of the Chantilly castle (The miniature is signed by M. M. Dolle) under which there is a relief composition in the form of crossed copies, a coat of arms with royal lilies and a crown. A round silver frame with a floral pattern is supported by two gracefully executed sphinx figures. The sculpture is in its original leather case with two gold-plated clasps, the interior lining of emerald green velvet and silk.
