This Russian Soviet pencil and watercolor on paper female costume design drawing is attributed to Boris Volkov and dated from the 1930s. Depicts a young woman dressed in Budenovka, a red dress, and scarlet boots in a dancing pose with a saber raised in her hand. The materials which are necessary for the manufacture of the costume are inscribed in Russian. Boris Ivanovich Volkov (Russian, 1900–1970) — painter, graphic artist, theater, and film designer. Graduated from the Stroganov School of Industrial Art. From 1913 to 1916, he received his first skills as a stage designer in the workshop at the Polenov People’s Theater, where he met with Polenov himself, A.M. Vasnetsov, K.A. Korovin. From 1922 to 1923 he worked in the Goskino studio, taking part in the creation of the first Soviet animated films. From 1924 to 1940 he was the chief artist of the Theater of the Moscow Provincial Council of Trade Unions (now the Mossovet Theater). From 1941 to 1949 he worked as the chief artist at the Musical Theater named after K.S. Stanislavsky and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, also at the Maly Theater (1951–1970).
