AUCTION 32: APRIL 2022 DECORATIVE AND FINE ART SALE
The plate is skilfully cast of gilded silver in antique Byzantium style. Decorated with repousse, hand-chased and hand-engraved images of the double-headed eagle – a traditional Byzantine Empire symbol, and figures of the imperial couple at the cross in decorative medallions on the rim. The plate is marked with 800 silver standard, the word "Ioannina" and possibly the maker’s name in Greek.
