AUCTION 32: APRIL 2022 DECORATIVE AND FINE ART SALE
Black chalk and brown ink on paper drawing heightened with white depicting a rider at the gates and three dogs by Tamara Abakelia. Housed in a gilt wooden frame. Please refer to the original paper labels on the back.
Tamara Grigorievna Abakelia (1905 – 1953) – Georgian sculptor, theater artist, graphic artist, graphic designer. From 1924 to 1929 she studied at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts, where N. P. Kandelaki, E. E. Lancere, and Ya. I. Nikoladze taught at that time. In theatrical and decorative painting, she began to work under the guidance of K. A. Mardzhanishvili. In the period from 1932 to 1934, she worked as an artist at the Kutaisi Theater named after Lado Meskhishvili.
Provenance: Purchased by a prominent Georgian collector from the artist’s family in the 1980s. Later acquired by the recent owner.
Dimensions: 8 1/2 x 6 1/8 in., (21.6 x 15.6 cm.)
Condition: Very good, original period frame.
