Japan, late Edo Period, ca. early 19th century CE. A lovely forged-iron maru gata tsuba, a disc-shaped hand guard traditionally employed on Japanese swords. The obverse side of the tsuba displays a butterfly in flight and a trio of chrysanthemum flowers adorns the lower half with one in full bloom. The verso, while mostly unadorned, displays a single chrysanthemum bulb. The butterflies and flowers on the obverse and verso are decorated with thin layers of gilding that elegantly complement the layers of brown patina. The tsuba is edged with a strip of brass. A fabulous example of Edo Period artistry.
