FEBRUARY 2023 DECORATIVE & FINE ART SALE
Two matched 19th-century French urn-shaped perfume burners, each made of green marble and raised up on three gilt-bronze feets with hoof endings and a serpent between them that coils down to eat a cluster of fruit, mounted onto the marble base. The lidded marble vases are flanked by two ormolu grape vine handles. Mounted on on circular green marble bases. Designed after the celebrated model by Pierre Gouthière, the famous chaser-gilder, active in France in the 18th-century. Gouthière created beautiful objets d’art for important figures of pre-revolutionary France, including Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and Louis XV’s mistress, Madame Du Barry.
