An oil on board genre painting attributed to Vladimir Makovsky (Russian, 1846 – 1920) and dated from the second half of the 19th-century. The painting depicts a conflict scene with two men and a woman in a room. One of the men grabs the woman from the table. Possibly the painting depicts a scene of a bride kidnapping traditional for the Bukovina Region. The characters are dressed in the traditional Ukrainian peasant costumes common to the region of Bukovina. The woman wears a shirt named ‘khlopianka’ or ‘boycut, ‘ a wrap-around striped overskirt, a sash that holds the overskirt in place, and a linen headdress. The man wears a high lamb fur hat, a long blouse, an embroidered waistcoat, and red pants. On his feet, there are white wool socks decorated with red embroidery and leather peasant sandals. The painting is unsigned.
